Overview
Recent development and implementation of advanced information and communication technologies (ICT) such as Internet-of-Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical System, Big Data Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, triggered a promising market of smart, connected product (SCP) (e.g. smart phone) [1], and hence, enabled the prevailing tendency of manufacturing value proposition towards a service-oriented manner, viz. smart product-service systems (PSS) [2]. Smart PSS, as a unique type of PSS, is defined as “an IT-driven value co-creation business strategy consisting of various stakeholders as the players, intelligent systems as the infrastructure, smart, connected products as the media and tools, and their generated e-services as the key values delivered that continuously strives to meet individual customer needs in a sustainable manner” [3]. In this context, huge amount of data is generated by SCPs from multiple sources across ad hoc connections, and ultimately transmitted to stakeholders through various analytic tools and business intelligence [4]. Hence, informatics-based approach serves as the key for value creation by providing the ability to identify user behavior patterns or latent needs [5]. Cost-effective mechanism/approaches should be introduced/identified for data acquisition, information fusion, knowledge extraction and intelligent decision-making. Moreover, the digitalization of products and services should be considered for new solution design of Smart PSS as well [6]. Nevertheless, as an emerging discipline, only few works discuss about its design innovation aspects. To address the above issues, this special issue aims to present the state-of-the-art informatics-based methodologies, tools and systems to support the stakeholder-oriented design innovation of Smart PSS. The topics of the special issue include, but are not limited to the followings:
· Smart service design
· Smart, connected product development
· Stakeholder-oriented servitization process
· Data-driven service innovation methodologies
· Artificial intelligence in design decision making
· Mobile crowdsensing for smart product-service innovation
