Overview
Aquatic macrophytic plants are key organisms in aquatic systems providing many ecosystem functions and services. Biodiversity loss is not sparing this group, but aquatic plants also have a higher proportion of problematic invasive alien species than terrestrial habitats. The presence or absence of certain endangered, common or invasive species often reflects the different pressures acting on aquatic systems. It is thus not surprising that the composition and functional traits of aquatic plants and plant communities can be good indicators for habitat conditions and the ecological quality of aquatic systems. This special issue will reflect presentations given at the 16th International Symposium on Aquatic Plants, held in Antwerp, Belgium in November 2023.
