Sergei Godunov is an outstanding scientist in the field of computational mathematics and differential equations. He is the inventor of the Godunov scheme and other fundamental concepts of approximation of hyperbolic problems. His work, in one way or another, had an immense impact on most modern numerical algorithms for fluids. He recently passed away and this special issue is a tribute to his many achievements. It contains translations of some of his works, originally published in Russian, and very difficult to find in English-speaking literature, as well as original contribution by some of the main players of the field.
