Overview
In the ever-evolving landscape of sustainable development, the circular economy (CE) stands as a beacon for transformative change (Suárez-Eiroa et al., 2019). Although there is a growing enthusiasm and backing for CE, the majority of global manufacturing systems still operate in a predominantly linear manner, posing challenges to the environmental efficiencies of countries (Barra and Falcone, 2023). Literature identifies cultural, market, technological, and legal hurdles to CE changeover that perpetuate linearity (Kirchherr et al., 2018). The imperative for additional support in navigating this transition is crucial, as highlighted by recent studies. Public policy serves as a linchpin in facilitating this transition (Hartley et al., 2023). Moreover, the integration of novel decision analysis models (Pamučar et al., 2023) contributes essential insights for informed decision-making. Tailoring and adapting CE models to align with regional and urban strategies (D’Adamo et al., 2021; Vanhamäki et al., 2021) emerge as pivotal approaches, recognizing the diverse and contextual nature of the transition process. As we navigate the complexities of fostering circular practices, this special issue seeks to unravel the pivotal roles that policies and institutions play in embedding circularity within the fabric of socio-economic systems. Authors are invited to contribute innovative research that delves into the challenges and opportunities at the nexus of policy, institutions, and the circular economy. We aim to shed light on the multifaceted dimensions of how policy frameworks and institutional structures can advance the integration of circular principles, creating a symbiotic relationship between environmental sustainability and socio-economic development.
