Arthropods are defined by their segmented bodies and paired limbs that convey enormous degrees of variability and versatility, and which have allowed them to exploit numerous modes of life and environments. We invite contributions to Arthropod Structure & Development for a special issue focusing on the origin and evolution of appendages. Our aim is to highlight cutting edge research from multiple disciplines, including comparative morphology, developmental biology and invertebrate paleobiology, each of which plays a key role in our understanding of one of the core innovations that characterize the arthropod body plan in the present day and through deep time.
