Oxidation catalysis is one of the largest application areas of catalysis in industry. It encompasses the introduction of electronegative elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, fluorine etc. into hydrocarbons and related compounds. Oxidation catalysis is not limited to industrial or even human-made processes, but also widespread in biological systems, catalysed by enzymes and therefore also interesting for biomimetic or bioinspired catalysis. Originally largely executed with heterogeneous, inorganic compounds as catalysts, organometallic compounds became widespread oxidation catalysts both in research and in industrial applications. Chiral oxidation catalysts are obtaining increasing interest for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and other value added compounds.
