Today’s financial markets are undergoing rapid transformation fuelled by innovative technologies such as big data, blockchain, and algorithmic trading. While these innovations promise efficiency and accessibility to finance, they also give rise to significant challenges related to misconduct, such as fraudulent behavior, market manipulation, and ethical lapses. Measured and appropriate regulatory mechanisms are key to foster an environment where financial innovations thrive and benefit the consumers and the societies. This special issue aims to discuss these critical issues, exploring how innovations in finance can be harnessed responsibly, identifying emerging forms of misconduct and its impacts, and assessing the effectiveness of existing or evolving regulatory frameworks. Insights derived from this exploration are poised to contribute significantly to the ongoing debates on responsible financial innovation and the need for adaptive regulatory responses.

Notably, we will give high priority to and nurture brand-new finance research projects i.e., fresh ideas that have not yet been started. Specifically, we strongly encourage research teams to pitch a “pre-registered” report (before any data has been collected or analyzed). Then, both pre-registered reports and companion fully executed studies can be published after an appropriate peer review process.

The special issue calls for all research teams (including both pre-registered reports and fully executed studies) to work in line with the principles of “Responsible Science”.

It is of prime importance that all participants carefully read and be guided by “PBFJ Editorial … Engaging with responsible science. “OPEN FOR BUSINESS” – Launching the PBFJ pre-registration publication initiative” (access link: PBFJ Editorial … Engaging with responsible science. “OPEN FOR BUSINESS” – Launching the PBFJ pre-registration publication initiative - ScienceDirect). This guidance is especially critical for those participants interested in pitching a pre-registered report.
