Overview
Sonochemical irradiation is undoubtedly an unconventional field of activation of reacting molecules. Stalwarts like Kenneth S Suslick, Timothy J Mason, Pedro Cintos, Giancarlo Cravotto and Aharon Gedanken have made rich contributions to the field of Nanomaterials by introducing Sonochemistry as a synthetic tool to the scientific community. Carbon nanomaterials are unique and they should be dealt with separately owing to the scale at which they were explored. Fullerenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and carbon nanodots are some of the outstanding examples of carbon nanomaterials. There is plenty of room in the research on carbon nanomaterials in particular. Graphite and diamond were the classical examples of allotropes of carbon materials. With advances in characterization techniques at the nanoscale, carbon forms such as those stated earlier were added to the list of carbon allotropes. It is hypothesized that many such new forms of carbon nanomaterials, especially with hydrophilic properties and peculiar geometry (nanoonions, nanocylinders, nanocubes, nanosieves, and many others) and structure, can be produced with the advances in the unconventional methods of synthesis like those of the sonochemical, microwave, electrochemical methods, and micro plasma irradiation unlike the classical methods of synthesis like the chemical vapour deposition (CVD), the laser ablation, hydrothermal method, template-assisted synthesis, and others. However, the scope of the present special issue is narrow and is limited to techniques related to either sonochemical irradiation or hybrid methods of synthesis involving sonochemistry.
