Overview
Edge computing is a burgeoning technology paradigm revolutionizing how data is processed, stored, and analyzed in the digital age. By decentralizing processing capabilities, edge computing minimizes latency, enhances real-time decision-making, and reduces bandwidth usage by processing data locally. This approach is particularly crucial for applications requiring low latency, such as autonomous vehicles and extended reality (XR). On the other hand, aerial networks have garnered significant attention for their ability to provide higher wireless coverage to users, offer more flexible network configurations to meet diverse requirements, and entail lower capital costs as compared to terrestrial networks. Here, aerial networks encompass a range of airborne assets, including unmanned aerial systems (UASs) and balloons, interconnected to form a high-speed and universal data network. Aerial networks facilitate data transmission to edge devices and offer air computation capabilities, while edge computing can execute time-critical but complex control operations offloaded from aerial networks. This synergy between aerial networks and edge computing promises to revolutionize how we gather and utilize data, enhancing efficiency, scalability, and responsiveness in a variety of applications across industries, such as agriculture, disaster response, infrastructure monitoring, and environmental conservation. This special issue aims to explore the state-of-the-art developments, new architecture, potential applications, and novel solutions/algorithms for optimizing aerial-aided edge computing. It will bring together academic and industrial researchers to stimulate the discussion to explore the potential challenges and emerging technologies of achieving the synergy between aerial networks and edge computing.
