Overview
In the face of escalating climate change and extreme climate impacts, along with population growth, land degradation, and increasing water demand, many countries find themselves grappling with water supply issues of both quantity and quality. This puts critical ecosystems like wetlands, forests, rivers, and lakes in jeopardy. In response to these challenges, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) have emerged as innovative approaches. The concept of NbS has been used as early as 2008 to address different environmental challenges. NbS encompasses strategies focused on the protection, restoration, and sustainable management of ecosystems. By harnessing the inherent resilience of nature, NbS offers efficient remedies to the adverse effects of anthropogenic climate change drivers and biodiversity loss and acquires more optimized ecosystem services for humans and their environment. As such, this special issue provided novel scientific advancements in NbS which were presented during the 20th IWA International Conference on Diffuse Pollution in Korea. In particular, this special issue highlighted the multiple environmental benefits of NbS applications to various land uses for different purposes.
