Overview
Necrotrophic pathogens cause major pre- and post-harvest diseases in numerous agronomic and horticultural crops inflicting significant economic losses. They employ a “kill and feed” strategy based on complex mechanisms using a battery of secreted vesicles, toxins, and proteins including plant cell-wall degrading enzymes, Cell death-inducing proteins and effectors. In response to microbial attack, the plant develops several resistance mechanisms. This special issue has a broad scope and is open to all biological models (bacteria/fungi/oomycetes/nematodes/plants) involved in plant-necrotroph interactions. It welcomes the submission of original research articles or reviews devoted to molecular mechanisms by which the necrotrophic microbes regulate their virulence programs, or the host plants respond to this biotic stress.
