Special issue information:
The behavioral neuroendocrinology of hormonal contraceptives (HCs) is a timely and tumultuous topic – both scientifically and socio-politically. Indeed, in recent years there has been an upsurge of studies comparing users and non-users along with heightened interest in the development of mechanistic animal models. These studies have simultaneously reached some conclusions and revealed great complexity in the timing, nature, and implications of HC effects on the brain and behavior. Articles ideal for this special issue will unpack that complexity through rigorous, pioneering methods. Specifically, review and empirical articles – in humans and animal models –will reflect innovation in the behavioral neuroendocrinology of HCs. They will go beyond the detection of effects to uncover biological (e.g., neural) mechanisms or moderators, and to delineate real-world variability in HC-linked decisions and behaviors, incorporating individual differences, context, and heterogeneity in HC formulations and patterns of use.
