Overview
The journal BioSystems (Elsevier) is announcing a special issue devoted to examining anthropogenesis and evolution of human consciousness from a variety of perspectives. In cooperation with the nascent “International Academy of Information Studies” (IAIS) (https://sites.google.com/view/iais-info/home), it will be coordinated by Terrence W. Deacon (neuroanthropologist and evolutionary biologist), Pedro C. Marijuán (information scientist), Giuseppe Iurato (complex systems scholar) and Abir U. Igamberdiev (BioSystems' Editor in Chief).
In the current state of accelerated social change at a global scale, it is important to explore the evolutionary processes that led to the appearance of the unique mental capacities that distinguish our species and to formulate the basic principles that determined the development of reflexive human consciousness, language, symbolic communication, social emotions, social networking, and other attributes of human civilization. This new dialog on the origin and evolution of conscious human beings and on the dynamics of societies has become a highly important and timely exercise. Current advances in the disciplines that study human evolution are required for a comprehensive interpretation of contemporary trends of human societies and the formulation of powerful concepts that could help in forecasting the future development of civilization—a most challenging multidisciplinary exercise indeed. From its founding in 1967, BioSystems has been an avant-garde journal, and has explored the densest interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary topics in the different epochs, exemplified by charismatic chief editors such as the team formed by Michael Conrad and Lynn Margulis.
As stated, the main objective of this special issue is to provide an overview of the state of art in the multiple fields related to anthropogenesis, evolution of consciousness, and social dynamics. We invite the scholarly community to join this BioSystems venture, apportioning views from areas such as evolutionary biology, paleoanthropology, evolutionary psychology, origin of language and arts, network science, non-linear economics, social psychology, social and political sciences, natural and artificial intelligence, computer science, and the new approaches to history and social evolution forecasting. We can promise that the result of tis multidisciplinary collaboration will be an exciting collective enterprise.
The deadline for manuscript submissions is December 20, 2024 with publication in 2025.
Authors interested in participating in this special issue are invited to provide a tentative title and authorship to the guest editors before June 30, 2024. Manuscripts will be peer-reviewed following standard BioSystems journal procedures. All communications on manuscript submission and peer reviewing will be managed within the Elsevier Editorial System. Upon manuscript submission, please choose “VSI: Anthropogenesis” for the type of paper. Please direct questions to any of Special Issue editors.
