Overview
Igneous and metamorphic processes in the mantle, from magma generation in divergent and convergent margins, to oceanic and continental subduction zones, and finally recycling of crustal lithologies into the deep mantle where they are distributed and resampled in ascending mantle volumes, are inextricably linked to Earth’s surface environments, including its hydrosphere and atmosphere. The study of these varied processes has been a fast-evolving field over the last decades, and old disciplinary boundaries between geochemistry, mineralogy, structural geology, and geodynamics increasingly disappear. As an example, the surface and deep cycles of volatile elements (hydrogen, carbon, sulphur, nitrogen, noble gases, halogens), are connected through metamorphic reactions via fluids, such as the genesis of magmas in the mantle or deep crust, transport of major and trace elements from the crust to the deep mantle, mantle metasomatism and redox processes, with strong implications for the rheological and other physical properties of the lithosphere. In support of efforts aimed at rectifying the historic gender imbalance plaguing in particular STEM fields, in this special issue, we focus on the contributions of early-to-mid carrier women scientists, whose work and collaborations have greatly improved our knowledge over the last decade. All the invited papers will have a woman Earth scientist as first author, to honour her vision in research and her ability to create a multi-disciplinary and multi-gender network in the petrology-related geoscience community.
This special issue is for invited authors only.
