Overview
Exactly 100 years ago, Russian botanist Nikolai Vavilov first delineated the geographical regions where crop domestication begun. These ‘centers of diversity’ hold crops’ wild ancestors but also speciose sets of their co-evolved natural enemies, pollinators and associated microbiota. Since the earliest days of agriculture, they have constituted loci for crop protection innovation and test-beds for sustainable farming practices. In this Special Issue, we invite contributions that illuminate how this rich biodiversity can underpin transformative pest, weed or plant disease mitigation solutions and what factors lead to their abandonment. Overall, we welcome holistic, system-level perspectives on how (on- or off-farm; above- or below-ground) biodiversity and cross-scale organismal interactions can be steered to promote a true ecological intensification of agriculture. We are particularly keen to receive contributions from pesticide-intensive crops such as (tropical) fruits or those where biological control is indispensable to avert biodiversity-yield trade-offs e.g., cereal grains.
